Staff Burn-Out working Remote???
I enjoy remote working, the benefits to me outway the want or need to be in an office environment.
Financial: Rather than spending money on commuting, buying food and drink that is not my local area. I can save that money, spend it locally to boost the local economy and jobs for people that live close to me.
Environmental: The amount of fuel bought for the car as drop significantly with no need to drive to the train/bus stations. As the mileage has dropped so has the need for replacing serviceable items. Not buying pre-packed sandwiches having coffee in paper/plastic mugs has reduced a huge amount of landfill waste
Social: I get to spend more time with the people I want in my life from the time saved traveling. Okay, so I miss out on developing new friendships with people I would never meet (Well not really, because as I work remotely I can develop friendships with people from all over the world, rather than just those that can commute to the same place)
As always there are winners and losers when it comes to change and for me remote working makes me the winner. The losers. Well, they are those businesses that got used to the constant funds from people earning money to give it away just to earn some money to pay their real bills.
When I lost my job through redundancy, I was the loser and the business carried on. I was the one that had to adapt to the changes forced upon me. I rolled up my sleeves, retrained, built up my skills to ensure I would be able to show value and be able to survive without relying on the state.
Now it is the time of those businesses to do what I have had to do on more than one occasion. Unlike me, they have a larger amount of resources to fall back on than I ever had.
As is typical of some, there are businesses trying hard to rubbish the benefits I have found from remote work. A great example of a business looking for the easy way out is: Concerned that their staff is reporting getting burnout from working remotely. so they should come back to the office.
Really?
I can think of many reasons to counter that argument to have staff sitting in a room together rather than remote. They are all financial, not environmental or social because when as a business ever been concerned about those latter points unless there was a legal requirement upon them.
For anyone struggling with time management/sitting at a desk too much/not taking breaks then I suggest you look at break time tools. My favourite is Stretchly .
